Pain low in the abdomen

Pain associated with sexually transmitted infections is most often experienced:

  • when passing urine
  • during sex
  • low in the abdomen (below the tummy).
In women, major genital organs are found inside the pelvis including the uterus (womb), fallopian tubes and ovaries. Problems related to these organs can cause pain low in the abdomen. While there are many causes of pain low in the abdomen, this can be a sign of an STI such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea or trichomoniasis or you may be pregnant.

What to do

If you are experiencing pain, see your local doctor, family planning clinic or sexual health clinic.
