Community Mental Health

Mental health problems can happen to any of us at periods in our lives. Some people may experience a short term problem associated with a personal crisis whereas others may experience the long term effects of a mental illness.

The Mackay Adult Mental Health Service adopts the Recovery Focussed Service Model and is a multidisciplinary team consisting of Social Workers, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Psychologists and Psychiatrists.   The team provides assessment and a range of treatments and services for people 18 years and over who have a serious mental disorder and who live in the Mackay area. 

Our Adult teams are supported by administrative officers who provide reception and other administrative tasks.  In all, there are eight Adult teams operating within the Mackay Division of Mental Health & Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Services – this number includes an Indigenous Liaison team, Bowen Hospital and the Whitsunday Community Health facility, which are designed to service the needs of the population within our region.

A Child and Youth team also operate from Community Mental Health providing a comprehensive service for children and youth with a mental illness or severe mental health problem.  Read more
 
Who can apply for our help?

• Anyone with severe and enduring mental health problems can apply for help. You must live within the Mackay region or be a patient in a hospital in the borough, and need help and support.

How do I contact the team?

• Services can be accessed by a referral from your GP or other community agencies. You can also make your own referral for an assessment – relatives or someone else who knows you well can also make a referral.  Please contact: Mackay Mental Health Team, Tel: 07 4968 3893 (24 hour service).  If you are in hospital, you will be automatically be linked to your community mental health social worker, a community psychiatric nurse and a GP.

What will happen then?

• You will be contacted by a member of your local community mental health team who will talk to you about the concerns or issues you are experiencing. They may also talk to anyone who currently helps you at home. This may lead to an assessment, which will help in deciding which services we can arrange for you. Following this assessment, an individual  treatment plan is devised.  Support is offered to the client according to their individual needs and may be for a short period of time or on a long term basis.

Is there a charge for this?

• Health services are free however you may have to pay prescription charges for medication.  Your mental health services worker will explain any cost and financial help that may be available to you before he or she arranges services.
