Careers in Mental Health

Queensland Health is working to develop a comprehensive, recovery-oriented mental health system that delivers high quality mental health services to the community.  We aim to provide a coordinated approach in providing a full range of services that promote mental health and well-being.  We also aim to prevent mental health problems, reduce the burden of mental illness on individuals, their families and the community, and promote resilience and recovery to encourage people to participate meaningfully in society.

Our clinical come from a range of professional disciplines, including Nurses, Allied Health ProfessionalsMedical Officers, including psychiatrists, principal house officers, senior medical officers and residents provide a range of medical services to clients in all areas of our service. 

Opportunities are available across a broad spectrum of areas and specialities including of adult services, child and youth, forensics, dual diagnosis, eating disorders and indigenous services.

Another area of great importance is the range of administrative and non-clinical services which support the Division, of which there are a number of speciality functions:

Operational Officers are also employed within the Inpatient Unit and at Community Services.

Our service provides opportunities in both clinical and non-clinical positions across a broad spectrum of areas including adult services, child and youth, forensics, dual diagnosis, eating disorders and indigenous services.

Nursing

Nursing is the largest occupational group employed by Mackay Ingretrated Mental Health Services.  As the ‘front line’ for the health care system, nurses provide an important and valuable service to society and to the service through the provision of nursing care to patients with mental illness who are undergoing treatment and support in hospitals, clinics, community settings or private homes.  The most senior nursing positions are the Nurse Unit Manager (Grade 7) and the Clinical Nurse Consultant (Grade 7).  The Nurse Unit Manager is responsible for the day to day operations of the Mental Health Unit, and the Clinical Nurse Coordinator has service wide responsibilities for nursing issues.  Each shift in the Mental Health Unit is headed by a Clinical Nurse (Grade 6) who is in charge for the shift.  Registered nurses (Grade 5) and Enrolled Nurses (Grades 3 & 4) are also employed in the Mental Health Unit.
Clinical Nurses (Grade 6) are employed in the Community teams as case managers, as well as in the specialist positions such as Forensic Mental Health Worker and Psycho-generic Worker.

Allied Health



Occupational Therapists work with people of all ages with a variety of conditions caused by injury or illness, psychological or emotional difficulties, developmental delay or the effects of ageing. Their goal is to assist individuals to improve their everyday functional abilities and enable independence, well being and quality of life. Occupational therapists help patients maximise function and enable participation in their own lives.
Occupational Therapists are employed in a wide range of areas including hospitals, community health centres, occupational health centres, home care services, aged care facilities, schools, tertiary institutions and private practice. Occupational Therapists work with people throughout the life span: infants and children, adolescents, adults and the elderly.
Occupational Therapists within MIMHS are employed as case managers across the community teams and in the Mental Health Unit.

Psychologists are experts in human behaviour, personality, interpersonal relationships, learning and motivation.  In the health industry, Psychologists play an important role in helping individuals to enjoy and improve their quality of life by assisting in the management of many common mental health disorders, and by equipping people with the skills needed to function better and to prevent problems.  A Neuropsychologist specialises in the assessment and diagnosis of brain impairment and how this affects thinking skills, emotions, behaviour and personality.  They are also involved in the rehabilitation and management of the effects of brain impairment and often work with other health professionals.
Psychologists are employed mostly in the Adult and Child and Youth community teams.  Psychologists working with Queensland Health are required to be registered by law.

Social work involves working with people in the context of their environment and social systems at critical points (often at a time of crisis) to promote social change, problem solving in human relationships and empowerment for patients, their families and carers.  Social Workers provide information, counselling, emotional and practical support.  They operate as members of the multi-disciplinary health care team that provide services in a broad variety of areas, but their primary concern is to address the social and psychological factors that surround patients’ physical and/or medical presentation.
Social workers are employed in all areas of the service, including the Mental Health Unit and the Community teams in Adult and Child and Youth in both Mackay and the Whitsundays.  Social workers in MIMHS must be eligible to be a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers, which is the national body representing the discipline.

Medical Officers

 

Medical Officers (Doctors or Practitioners) diagnose, treat and assist in the prevention of human physical and mental illness, disease and injury and promote good human health.  Medical officers are involved in a wide range of activities including consultations, attending emergencies, performing operations and arranging medical investigations.
Medical Officers include the Director, Psychiatrists, Senior Medical Officers, Residents Medical Officers (PGY1 - PGY4).  The Director who is responsible for psychiatric services reports to the Director Medical Services of the Mackay Health Service District.
