Good communication is a fundamental building block in providing good patient care. Yet healthcare communication is almost always time-pressured, and different communication styles can create very different impressions. This course emphasises the power of non-verbal communication, and uses facilitated discussion and real-life examples for participants to explore the issues and find solutions for themselves. The Family Partnership Training Course is designed to provide basic training in the Hilton Davis Parent Advisor/Family Partnership Model (Davis 1993, Davis Day & Bidmead 2002-see www.cpcs.org.uk).
The theoretical framework underlying this Model emphasises the need for highly skilled professional communication and assumes that a respectful relationship between parent and helper is a powerful support in its own right and the means by which parent's self esteem may be increased. Therefore, the aim of the current training course is to enable child health staff working with children and parents to improve their understanding of the helping processes, and to provide the opportunity to practice the skills of engaging parents and developing supportive and effective relationships with them.
Training is conducted on an as-needs basis. Contact your local Child and Family Health Service for details and dates of training.

The Australian Government has funded a National Smokefree Pregnancy Project (NSPP). Quit South Australia are managing the national project and The Cancer Council Queensland is co-ordinating the project for Queensland.
The NSPP aims to encourage maternity care staff and Indigenous health workers to provide information, advice and support around smoking in pregnancy.
In Queensland smoking related deaths among Indigenous people are approximately three times higher than the state average. SmokeCheck is a Queensland Health program that trains health professionals working with Indigenous clients in brief intervention for tobacco use.
SmokeCheck uses brief intervention and a motivational interviewing approach to assist Indigenous clients to quit smoking. Culturally appropriate resources have been developed as part of the program.
SmokeCheck training provides health professionals with the skills and tools required to provide smoking cessation interventions to Indigenous clients. Health professionals who have taken part in SmokeCheck training receive regular refresher training, SmokeCheck newsletters and one-on-one support.
