Mackay Base Hospital Project Overview

The Queensland Government has invested over $408 million in redevelopment infrastructure for the Mackay Base Hospital in order to meet the health needs of the increasing population north Queensland population.

Mackay is one of Queensland’s fastest growing cities. It is the gateway to the beautiful Whitsunday Islands and the prosperous Bowen Basin and a number of Mining communities. Mackay required a facility that could incorporate flexibility into the design to allow for future expansion.

Planning and design stages commenced back in 2007.

  • STAGE 1: Will prepare the site for construction activity and involve transitional works such as demolishing existing buildings, the buildings to be retained, installing the infrastructure service loop, supplying the temporary outpatients department, upgrading the helipad.
  • STAGE 2: Begin construction of the Mental Health Unit, kitchen, and the new Main Clinical Building and Inpatient Units. The construction compound will be re-established for the new main entrance to be built.
  • STAGE 3: Will refurbish remaining suitable buildings and build a new main entrance to the hospital. Finishing touches to landscaping and car parks will conclude the redevelopment at the end of 2013.
