Requirements to Practise | Overseas Trained International Medical Graduates


All doctors who work in Queensland Heatlh hospitals and facilities must have current registration with the Medical Board of Queensland (MBQ).

The Medical Boards

Each State and Territory of Australia has a Medical Board with the responsiblity for regulating the medical profession in the interests of public safety.  The medical boards are Statutory Authorities which means they are government organisations with specific authority to make enforceable decisions.  They are not part of, nor do they report to the heatlh departments such as Queensland Health.  Likewise, Queensland Health has no power to issue or refuse registration.

The Medical Board of Queensland

The Medical Practitioners Registration Act 2001 ("the Act") is the primary piece of legislation relating to the registration of doctors in Queensland.  To practise as a medical practitioner in Queensland, a doctor must have current medical registration with the Medical Board of Queensland ('The Board').  Registration in one State does not automatically allow a practitioner to practise in another State, certain conditions apply.

The categories of registration in Queensland are:

International Medical Graduatess (IMGs) who obtain Special Purpose Registration with the Medical Board of Queensland are required to progress to an Australian equivalent qualification within a specified timeframe.  This can be achieved by following one of three pathways:

  1. the standard pathway;
  2. competent Authority pathway; and
  3. specialist pathway

Australian Medical Council (AMC)

The Australian Medical Council (AMC)  is an national statutory authority and is the national body responsible for the:

The AMC administers 2 national examinations for non specialist doctors wishing to progress to eligibility for general registration in the state where they are practising. 

These 2 examinations are designed to assess for registration purposes the medical knowledge and clinical skills for IMGs. 

The exams are run multiple times during the calendar year and in a number of Australian states.
