“I studied medicine in Aberdeen in Scotland and have worked as a consultant Anaesthetist outside London, before joining Queensland Health about five years ago. I find it’s a great opportunity and particularly enjoy the possibilities for research education. I think the opportunities offered by Queensland Health are second to none. It’s a good challenge and you are making a difference to peoples lives.

Since arriving with Queensland Health, the opportunities as an overseas doctor have been enormous. I have also been able to make a real contribution through my participation on several advisory panels to the future of Queensland.

Living in Queensland has also given my family many opportunities to really enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. There is also good quality education and my children have the future that Brisbane and Queensland offers."

“I studied medicine at the University of Queensland, undertook an internship and was junior doctor doctor at Rockhampton, before completing further training in Anaesthetics.

There are lots of reasons I like practicing in the rural area.  I think the Rural Generalist training opportunities these days in terms of a defined training program for doctors wanting to go bush is a key progressive initiative of Queensland Health.

I think that leads to a more comfortable working environment, particularly in rural areas where you are working in small teams.  The teams that I have worked with recently have had a collegiate attitude, were very willing to work together, and had the ability to look after each other in terms of the hours worked, the coverage of patients and the ability to socialise.

Going bush gives you great opportunities to travel more and really experience local tourism and other facilities, including the famed Stanthorpe vineyards.”

“Medicine is bigger than most people think. There is such a broad range of career paths and opportunities for development. My job is challenging and stimulating, and I enjoy helping people. I love my job and get great job satisfaction from working with other health professionals towards the same goal.”
