Director of Mental Health

The Director of Mental Health is responsible for public mental health policy, strategy and service delivery in Queensland.

Mental Health Act 2000 establishes broad monitoring and oversight functions for the Director of Mental Health including:

ensuring the protection of rights of involuntary patients
ensuring that involuntary admission, assessment and treatment of persons complies with the Act
facilitating the proper and efficient administration of the Act
promoting community awareness and understanding of the administration of the Act
advising and reporting to the Minister on any matter relating to the administration of the Act.

The Director also has powers and functions in relation to people with mental illness who are, or have been, subject to criminal justice system processes.
