The history of mental health services in Queensland over the last 150 years is one of both change and challenges. While the physical and social conditions for people with mental illness have greatly improved, stigma and discrimination continue to contribute to their isolation and social disadvantage.
As part of Queensland's celebrations of 150 years of independence from New South Wales, we have taken this opportunity to reflect on the origins and challenges of the mental health system in Queensland over the period 1859-2009. Here we also look to the future at the system Queensland Health is building to support people with mental illness, their families and their carers.
