Localised management means more involvment from the community and health professionals

As part of the National Health Reforms, the Queensland Government is introducing 17 new local Hospital and Health Services (HHSs) by 1 July 2012.

Metro South will become the HHS responsible for providing public health services to the large and diverse geographical area incorporating Brisbane's south side, Logan and Redland.

What is changing?

Metro South has a strong history of delivering quality, integrated health services through six individual hospitals and a collection of residential, community and primary health services.

Under the reforms, the day-to-day functioning of our facilities and services will stay the same. However, as a Hospital and Health Service, we will become an independent, statutory body under the leadership and management of a Hospital and Health Board. Our Board will be responsible for the direct management of the facilities and services within our network's geographical boundaries.

It is important to note that the health reforms will not change the high standard of service delivered at our facilities. Instead, it will mean localised management with more involvement from clinicians and the community.

Benefits to the community

As part of Queensland Health's existing district structure, Metro South already has a reputation as a leader in service delivery, clinical governance, training, recruitment and retention, and workforce culture.

In addition to building on this strong track record, the reforms will:

put the day-to-day running of our hospitals and services in the hands of health professionals at the clinical coalface as well as the community that ultimately benefits from our services;
allow us to have a closer working relationship with patients, families, community groups, GPs and other primary health providers;
provide better access and greater transparency of our organisation to the community we serve; and
allow us to receive Federal and State government funding comparable with the increasing demand on our clinical services through an Activity Based Funding model.

Local decision making

As part of the reforms, Metro South will be managed locally by both clinicians and members of the community in the form of a Hospital and Health Board.

Metro South's Hospital and Health Board will:

be made up of health professionals as well as people who are experts in the unique needs of our local community;
be the primary decision maker on the management of Metro South's health services, especially with regard to patient care and clinical service priorities;
act in the interests of the local community and its network and be subject to strong transparency arrangements; and
include representatives with specific expertise in fields such as human resources, finance, legal, medical training and research, and health consumer advocacy.
