Where I work: Longreach Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Central West Health Service District I moved from NZ to OZ five years ago and started work with Queensland Health in Brisbane. From the word go I have found Queensland Health very supportive in all aspects, especially encouraging nurses to further education and professional development opportunities. I was looking for a change where I could have even more of a work and lifestyle balance. With so many opportunities available in rural Queensland I decided to take advantage of the incentives on offer in remote Longreach. I now consider myself a local and enjoy exploring Queensland’s outstanding Central West region providing CYMHS outreach mental health services along the way. The people in rural Queensland are just fantastic and the kids I work with are great - different to the city. Some people hesitate at the thought of being in an isolated location but the level of support I received was tremendous; from the community, my team leader and my colleagues. The travel is a bonus for me. I am rewarded every day by being able to provide assistance to children and their families in very remote places that may have otherwise missed out. The pace of life in the country is just awesome, very laid back and relaxed. The lifestyle is easy and the people are uncomplicated. You really feel the sense of community. I can actually see the stars out here and the sun rises and sets are true to the outback charm rural Queensland has to offer. My advice? Just do it. Come with an open mind and just enjoy… Read more about Longreach and other locations in the Central West Health Service District |

Where I work: Toowoomba Community Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Darling Downs Health Service District I moved to Queensland in 2009 from Scotland with my two girls. We chose Queensland for a lifestyle change and are now very settled in the rural town of Toowoomba. Toowoomba offers all the modern conveniences of a big city but has the community values and calmness of a rural town. I am able to grow an amazing organic vegetable garden and love being able to explore not only the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, but also the amazing inland attractions that Queensland has to offer. Child and youth mental health is an ever changing and satisfying area of mental health. Our child and youth mental health services have a very healthy early intervention and rehabilitation focus, and provide assertive outreach services to the surrounding rural communities. I was attracted to Queensland Health as an employer because of the diverse career opportunities on offer. As an international medical graduate, I am very well supported by the structure of Queensland Health, and my local mental health service offers exciting professional development opportunities to advance my career. My advice? If you have children, spend time exploring the schooling options. There are a lot of good schools here! Where I work: Caboolture Adult Mental Health Team, Metro North Health Service District I lived in Portsmouth (South Coast of England), and served in the Military as a mental health nurse. I was commuting for a minimum of 3 hours every day to get to work. My wife Amelia and I had never been to Australia before but I had wanted to move here for many years, for the more relaxed lifestyle, better weather and improved career prospects. When the opportunity became available to work for Queensland Health, we decided to take a chance and made the move. We arrived in March 2010 and I started work after a week. Amelia is now also working for Queensland Health. Moving to Australia was not an easy transition, anyone who has moved here is aware of the emotional and financial implications of such a move, but with the help of the Queensland Health Candidate Care Program, the move was made so much easier. Support and advice was there when we needed it. We have met some amazing people since we moved to Queensland. I work with a great team, who have a very strong work ethic and are a pleasure to work with/for. I have access to continual professional development courses and have great career prospects. Amelia and I now both enjoy a much better work/life balance due to our flexible workplaces and less commuting time every day. Queensland has offered us a fantastic change of pace and adventure. We love the great weather, great beaches, great houses and have good stability at work. We both love being outside and being able to participate in sports all year round improved our outdoor lifestyle which suits us perfectly. My advice? Take the chance like I did… you’ll never look back! Read more about Caboolture and other locations in the Metro North Health Service District. |

Where I work: Kirwan Child and Youth Mental Health Service, Townsville Health Service District Five years ago I decided to make the move from Perth to Townsville and I now enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and exceptional professional opportunities that Queensland Health offers. I moved to Australia from England with my parents when I was seven and grew up in Perth. I worked in Queensland when I was training with the Army as a chef and then moved back to Perth to complete my studies in social work. I’m now based at Townsville’s Child and Youth Mental Health Service (CYMHS) Kirwin Centre, which is an essential and expanding service in the district. I love the diversity of children and interacting and working directly with their families in the mental health setting. I feel like we are assisting our client’s to make positive changes in their lives, implementing strategies to improve the health of their family dynamics. I come to work in a great work environment - the spirit and decorum within our team is excellent. Queensland Health has offered me a flexible and supportive workplace and I really enjoy working closely with the multi-disciplinary mental health team at the Kirwin CYMHS. I have found that the professional support within our team is also very good. We have access to many resources and experienced clinicians who share their knowledge while management is accessible and friendly.
