Interested in working as an interpreter for Queensland Health?

The Queensland Health Interpreter Service was estabished in November 2007.  Interpreting services in Queensland Health are based on:

  1. the use of staff or internal NAATI accredited or recognized interpreters where possible (ie. where demand for a language is high enough)
  2. all other interpreter services, including those for the hearing impaired, across the state provided through the Queensland Health External Interpreter Service Provider.

The majority of interpreter services across Queensland Health are provided by the Queensland Health External Service Provider – ONCALL Interpreters and Translators Agency.

Accredited or recognised interpreters who would like to work for Queensland Health in the near future are therefore encouraged to contact the Queensland Health External Service Provider – ONCALL Interpreters and Translators Agency:

Phone:  3018 0333
Email:  Brisbane@oncallinterpreters.com

Currently only the PA Hospital Health Service District and the Mater hospitals employ staff or internal interpreters. Over the next 12 months, Health Service Districts with high demand for interpreters in certain languages will assess whether that demand is sufficient to employ staff interpreters. The use of individual contracts with interpreters (“internal interpreters”) will continue at the PA Hospital Health Service District and the Mater hospitals.  This strategy will be evaluated after the first 12 months of implementation of the new service arrangements, to determine if this strategy should continue or be taken up by other Health Service Districts.
