Learning and development support

 Banner

Queensland Health endorses a ‘preceptorship’ model to support the transition of nurses and midwives to a new practice environment.  This may include:

  • New graduates entering the workforce for the first time;
  • New graduates from specialist post-graduate courses;
  • Nurses and midwives returning to practice after an absence of five or more years;
  • Nurses and midwives moving to new practice settings; and
  • International nurses and midwives.

Perceptorship can also be utilised to support other learning opportunities indentified through the PAD system.

Formal and informal support is provided by nurse/midwifery educators, preceptors, practice partners, buddies, mentors and clinical facilitators.  Mentoring, succession management and leadership development strategies are offered to support and encourage career progression.

Nurses and midwives are further supported in their learning and development through professional development leave, allowances and other incentives. (HR Policy G15 )
