The Northern Downs Health Service District covers an area from Dalby on the eastern side to Miles on the western side, and from Moonie in the south to Taroom in the north. The total population of the district is approximately 30,000. The land area covered is 50,536 square kilometres which is 79% the size of the isle of Tasmania.
The primary use of land across the district is the cultivation of grain crops including cotton and wheat, with sheep and cattle grazing prominent in some areas.
The main roads between centres in the Northern Downs Health Service District consist of sealed roads of varying quality. The Warrego Highway links the main communities from East to West and the Leichhardt is the major north-south road transport corridor.
Health transport is by way of the Queensland Ambulance Service or emergency aerial evacuation by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Careflight. The Queensland Ambulance Service has stations throughout the district in all major centres and QAS staff man all stations.
