The Prince Charles Hospital is Queensland’s first hospital, and the first large tertiary hospital in Australia, to decommission its use of reticulated nitrous oxide anaesthetic gas for environmental purposes.

Changes in thinking and mental state may occur with age, yet few people look after their brain as well as they do their heart or muscles.
We chat to TPCH physician and geriatrician Eamonn on his top tips for what you can do to help keep your brain healthy.
🧠 Train your brain: Keep your brain stimulated with online courses, learning languages, games, and puzzles.
🧠 Stop or reduce alcohol intake to sensible limits.
🧠 Reduce or stop smoking.
🧠 Feed your brain: Incorporating a more Mediterranean diet has shown great benefits.
🧠 Muscle is memory: Exercise plays a key role, so try regular walking, dancing, Pilates or yoga.
🧠 Prioritise sleep: Sleep is really important to brain health, so practice good sleep hygiene - get an early night, limit drinking alcohol, limit caffeine in the afternoon, no devices before bed, and separate bed from work.
🧠 Stay on top of overall health: ensure any conditions or illness are treated.
🧠 Find the right balance: ensure psychological health and wellbeing is prioritised.
If you’re worried about your brain health, or someone has noticed unusual behaviour, then talk to your local GP.

Let's give it up for our TPCH anaesthetics team, who have made a sustainable switch from reticulated nitrous oxide anaesthetic to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. ♻️💚
Dr Mary and her peers teamed up with Green Metro North, including sustainability manager Kellie, to decommission the use of N2O for the greater good of the environment.
“Anaesthetic gases make up five per cent of total healthcare emissions, of which nitrous oxide accounts for approximately 75 per cent of the total emissions from anaesthetic gases,” Dr Mary said.
“Although nitrous oxide is a safe anaesthetic gas, it is prone to leaking from piped infrastructure even when the reticulation system is well serviced and maintained."

Curiously, what is it being replaced with? Does this mean it will be replaced with something else in birthing suites as well, or not used at all?

What is it being replaced with?
A Mental Health Crisis Stabilisation Facility is expected to open later this year at The Prince Charles Hospital, providing immediate short-term care for those in need.
This new space will feature a comfortable environment for individuals in crisis and provide access to a multidisciplinary team, inclusive of the lived experience workforce. 🏠
As a social worker in the short stay unit, Jade will help to provide care for patients with complex mental health issues and support for their families and carers by using therapeutic interventions within a recovery and trauma informed framework.
"It’s such a privilege to work with people who trust you to walk alongside them and support them in their journey, and to see the resiliency in those that I work with every day, it is extremely motivating and rewarding," Jade said.

Will those suffering from suicidal ideation be able to go to this facility rather than the ED?
Have Social Workers employed by QLD Health previously had clinical input on treatment plans and management of consumers who for example may be experiencing Domestic and Family Violence? I have never seen any written evidence of support given directly for Domestic Violence, in any of the three hospitals I have been admitted to in QLD, spanning 6 mental health admissions in total, nor a discharge plan that might outline input or suggestions relating directly to plans for continuity of care for Domestic Violence support from any Social Workers, doctor's or specialists involved in my Mental Health care? I also have never seen any Domestic Violence Liaison Officers, that are meant to be available to support DV victims in all QLD hospitals, in any of my admissions either. Sadly, unless a patient reports concerns to Police, and many are unwilling for various reasons, it is hard to provide proof after Mental Health Admissions, that the reasons for admission are directly attributed to Domestic Violence abuse!
It would be great to see Metro North considering to employ Accredited Rehabilitation Counsellors in the unit as well!
And peer support in the model of care?? What’s the discharge/continuity of care plan/strategy
