Queensland Health recommends that clients consult with a medical practitioner prior to following these physical activity guidelines, particularly where they have been previously inactive, have heart disease or close relatives with heart disease, are pregnant or have other major health problems.

Provide clients with physical activity contact points eg. local walking groups.

Identify how clients travel every day (to work, school, etc.) and determine if physical activity can be incorporated.

Suggest pool walking, walking in shallow water at the beach or aquarobics for activity

Suggest other group activities - they offer more security for older people.

Suggest clients get up 10 minutes earlier to do some activity, then do 10 minutes at lunch, and then 10 minutes before dinner.

Suggest clients get up and do something each advertisement break on TV.

Suggest clients mow the lawn.

Suggest clients walk to the shops, rather than drive if close by.

Encourage family activities.

Promote council events eg. Bike Week.

Suggest clients walk the dog.

Encourage clients to walk when using their cordless phone.

Suggest clients find a partner to be active with, so they can maintain enjoyment and motivation.

Encourage clients to rely less on automatic devices, and use manual devices more often eg TV remote control

Encourage clients to park further away from their destination (eg. shops) and walk a little of the way.

Encourage clients to use the stairs rather than the lift where possible

Encourage clients to access gentle exercise classes

Suggest clients keep a diary of their activities.

Encourage clients to plan for activity and find a time when they know they can do it.
