Queensland Health recommends that clients consult with a medical practitioner prior to following these physical activity guidelines, particularly where they have been previously inactive, have heart disease or close relatives with heart disease, are pregnant or have other major health problems.

Encourage clients to read the National Physical Activity Guidelines while in hospital and set some goals before leaving hospital.

Encourage clients to walk to bathroom facilities rather than having them at the bedside.

Encourage sedentary clients to try brief activities eg walks to letterbox, walking around the block, getting out and about a little.

Include physical activity in nursing discharge planning.

Make physical activity section in care plans more substantial.

Refer clients to support groups and courses which have a physical activity focus eg arthritis support group and chronic disease self management.
