Queensland Health recommends that clients consult with a medical practitioner prior to following these physical activity guidelines, particularly where they have been previously inactive, have heart disease or close relatives with heart disease, are pregnant or have other major health problems.
-
Assess low risk diabetic patients' current exercise levels. Encourage them to build on that to increase their physical activity levels in their general lifestyle.
-
Clarify what physical activity is – often patients are participating in physical activities without realising it.
-
Display posters with the physical activity messages in consultation rooms, toilets, and waiting areas.
-
Identify cost-effective physical activities.
-
Provide clients with the National Physical Activity Guidelines for Adults and for Children and Young People brochure, and discuss it with them to simplify it.
-
Refer clients to the appropriate places to participate in these activities eg. Community Health Centres.
-
Suggest clients participate in walking groups, cycling groups, or even aquarobics.
-
Ensure clients wear fully enclosed, comfortable footwear while participating in physical activity.
