Queensland Health Refresher to Nursing Practice Program

The Queensland Health Refresher to Nursing Practice Program is designed to meet the learning needs of nurses who have been absent from nursing practice for a period of time that is less than five years. The nurse must have current registration / enrolment to undertake a refresher program.

The Queensland Health Refresher to Nursing Practice Program can be utilised as a refresher for both Enrolled Nurses and Registered Nurses. The program will be offered at no cost to the participant. The program provides a number of theoretical education modules as well as supervised clinical practice. Facilities have the option of allowing participants to complete the education modules at home in their own time. Supervised clinical practice is arranged for a time that suits both the participant and the facility.

The flexibility of the program enables facilities to design a program tailored to the learning needs of the participant. At commencement of the program, the participant is assessed and a program designed to suit their learning needs. This individual program includes length, and type, of supervised clinical practice required. A learning contract is developed from this plan. On completion of program participant is assessed again. This assessment is to assess for competence.

Duration of program: length of program depends on individual’s learning needs. Maximum length of program is twelve (12) weeks.

Cost of Refresher Program

The program will be provided free of charge to registered and enrolled nurses. Participants will need to undertake the program in their own time.

Which Facilities will offer the Program?

The framework for the program and the education modules are available to all Queensland Health facilities. Because of the other resources required to run the program eg. Appropriate clinical experience, preceptor support, nurse educator support etc - not all Queensland Health facilities will be able to provide the program. Some facilities may choose to commence refresher nurses in groups, at set times of the year. Other facilities may choose to take individual refresher nurses at a time negotiated between the facility and the nurse. Check with your local facility to see if they will be running a “Nursing Refresher Program”.
