There are a range of scholarships and/or grants Queensland nurses are eligible to apply for.
Queensland Health offers a number of scholarships each year for experienced Queensland nurses to undertake a nurse practitioner Master’s degree with a Queensland University. Scholarships are open to nurses employed by Queensland Health, Queensland NGOs and the Queensland Indigenous Community Control Sector.
Applicants must be eligible to enrol in a Nurse Practitioner Master’s program and be prepared to commence study the following year. Applicants must have the support of their employer. Employer support includes commitment to implementing the nurse practitioner role in the scholarship applicant’s area of practice.
The Office of the Chief Nurse is offering 20 Nurse Practitioner scholarships for nurses studying in 2008. These applications are now closed.
An additional 6 Heart Failure Nurse Practitioner scholarships will be offered by the Queensland Health Cardiac Networks (2 in each AHS). These applications are now closed.
The Indigenous Midwifery and Child Health Post Graduate Scholarship Scheme 2007 is designed to target Indigenous persons undertaking post-graduate studies in the areas of Midwifery and/or Child Health in 2008. The scholarships will offer successful applicants up to $10,000 for the university/course fees. These applications are now closed.
These scholarships are offered by Maternity, Child Health & Safety Branch, Queensland Health through the Office of the Chief Nurse, Queensland Health.
The Office of the Chief Nurse offers scholarships to registered and enrolled nurses and midwives working in Queensland Health facilities. These scholarships enable the successful applicants undertake post registration / enrolment studies. Applications open in September each year for scholarships in the following year.
The Queensland Health, Nursing and Midwifery Research Grant Scheme was established in 2004 and is open to all nurses and midwives employed by Queensland Health. The scheme aims to encourage nursing and midwifery research activities by providing financial support to nurses and midwives undertaking these initiatives.
The Office of the Chief Nurse offers scholarships to former registered and enrolled nurses who wish to undertake re-entry programs to return to the workforce. The scholarships are to a maximum amount of $3,000 and recipients must use the funds to undertake re-entry requirements through the Competence Assessment Service as approved by the Queensland Nursing Council.
Queensland Health Mental Health Scholarships are available for Queensland Health employees enrolled in postgraduate studies leading to Mental Health Endorsement for nurses. These scholarships provide assistance through part reimbursement of fees.
Queensland Nursing Council Scholarships are available for registered and enrolled nurses. This funding is available for conference attendance, professional development activities or accredited education programs. Contact QNC for further information.

The Royal College of Nursing Australia (RCNA) currently administers five Australian Government Funded Scholarship Schemes mostly targeted at nurses or nursing students who are living in rural and remote areas of Australia.
