Midwifery
Background
Following Re-Birthing the review of Maternity Services in Queensland 2005, the position of Midwifery Advisor was created in the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer. This position commenced in January 2008 and Cathy Styles is currently seconded to the position. Queensland Health also has a Maternity, Child Health & Safety Branch. The Units are separate but work together collaboratively.
Role of the Office of the Chief Nursing Officer (OCNO) in relation to Midwifery
The OCNO plays an important role in strategic midwifery professional issues including:
- The strategies for midwifery workforce (midwifery students, refresher, re-entry and retention);

Developing policy to enable midwifery practice in Queensland such as the midwifery Drug Therapy Protocol being developed, and the ultrasound and pathology ordering by midwives being developed;

Developing statewide protocols to support midwifery practice; and
-
Advising and supporting direction in Midwifery Models of Care.

Midwifery Drug Therapy Protocols
In line with the recommendations of the Re-birthing: report of the Review of Maternity Services in Queensland, and the specific request from the ACM, the Minister endorsed a review of the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 to allow midwives to initiate and administer certain medications according to a Drug Therapy Protocol (DTP).
