Water fluoridation

Water fluoridation helps protect teeth against decay. Tooth decay occurs when acid destroys the outer surface of the tooth. Fluoride can limit the amount of acid produced, and more importantly can also repair damage before it becomes permanent.

Water fluoridation is the adjustment of the natural levels of fluoride in the water supply to the recommended levels required for optimal oral health. Adding fluoride to drinking water is the cheapest and most effective way of providing oral health benefits to the entire community.

Water fluoridation commenced in South-East Queensland in December 2008. For more information on oral health and fluoride go to: http://www.health.qld.gov.au/fluoride/
