Guidelines for Managers

As a supervisor or manager, you are responsible for ensuring your work area has a well-planned workplace orientation and induction program for new employees.

The induction of a new staff member is the beginning of their learning experience and career development. They need information about their new work area and position, as well as training in relevant systems.

A good orientation and induction program benefits both the organisation and the new employee.

Managers and supervisors are advised to prepare for the arrival of a new employee, as suggested in the Pre-arrival checklist.

Planning in advance for tasks and activities to assign the employee when they commence is also recommended, as suggested in the Week 1 checklist.

Orientation and induction is an ongoing process. Information should be imparted gradually, giving the new employee time to absorb and reflect on it.

A well-planned orientation and induction program will promote a sense of belonging and achievement to help employees contribute to the Queensland Health's mission of:
