Professor David Theile SnrProfessor David Theile (Snr)
District Chief Executive Officer - Metro South Health Service District

Professor David Theile (Snr) has had a long career in clinical practice with progressive involvement in professional affairs and hospital administration culminating in his appointment as District Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Metro South Health Service District, which incorporates Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Dr Theile graduated MBBS with honours from the University of Queensland in 1962, completed his postgraduate training as a resident and surgical registrar at Royal Brisbane Hospital and gained his fellowship to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 1967. After three years in the UK he returned to Brisbane and in 1974 was appointed to the Visiting Staff of PAH as a General Surgeon, a position he held until his appointment of CEO.

Dr Theile committed himself extensively to the activities of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, serving as national President and being awarded the College’s highest award (the Sir Hugh Devine Medal).

In 2000, David Theile was appointed Chairman of the Division of Surgery at PAH and he occupied this post until his appointment as PAH's Clinical CEO in 2006, and ultimately Metro South's District CEO in 2008.


Dr Richard Ashby

and Director, Medical Services


Dr Ashby is a University of Queensland graduate who undertook his Internship at Princess Alexandra Hospital and subsequently worked in provincial and rural centres and at the QEII Hospital.  He was appointed Director of Emergency Medicine at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in 1989, a post he held until his appointment as Executive Director Medical Services at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in 2000.  During this period, Dr Ashby spent a year as the Assistant Regional Director - Policy & Planning for the Brisbane North Regional Health Authority.

Dr Ashby is a Past President of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine and was Chairman of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine from 1994 - 96.  In the period 2000 - 2006, Dr Ashby also acted as District Manager at both the Royal Brisbane and Women’s and Princess Alexandra hospitals for lengthy periods before transferring to the role of Executive Director of Medical Services at PAH 2006.

With the new Metro South district alignment, Dr Ashby is now in the joint positions of Executive Director of Princess Alexandra Hospital, Executive Director of Medical Services for Metro South, and Director of Medical Services for PAH.


Veronica Casey

Veronica Casey
Executive Director, Nursing Services


Veronica's extensive nursing career includes stints as the Nursing Director of PAH's Division of Medicine, Executive Director of Aged and Disability Services for The Prince Charles Hospital, and Director of Nursing for the Royal Women’s Hospital.  She has also held redevelopment, quality and clinical positions across a number of medical nursing specialties.

Veronica's special interests are in safety and quality in patient care, care of the aged and rehabilitation nursing.  She is a member of the Queensland Nursing Council  and chairs the Premier's advisory committee on recruitment in nursing.


Julie Connell

Julie Connell
Executive Director, Clinical Support Services

Julie has been the Executive Director of Clinical Support Services at Princess Alexandra Hospital since 2002.  Her pathway through PAH began in 1980 as an Occupational Therapist in the Spinal Injuries Unit, a return to practice in 1991 in the Head Injuries Unit, and progression through the Occupational Therapy Department from Senior OT to Assistant Director and then Director of Occupational Therapy.

Julie is qualified with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (UQ -1979), Cert 4 Workplace Assessment & Training, Grad Cert in Management (QUT - 2003), and is presently the National Vice President of OT Australia.


Peter Frew

Peter Frew
Executive Director, PA Support Services

Peter has an extensive background in Industrial Relations.  He has had some ten years experience and has been an Industrial Relations advocate through employment with both the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission and the Department of Industrial Relations with specific representation for Queensland Health. Peter has a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Economics, Government and IR.

Ten years of experience as a Human Resources practitioner led to his appointment as Director of Human Resources at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. During this time, Peter and his HR team received a national Australian Council of Healthcare Standards Award for recruitment practices and were an integral part of the establishment of the nursing Magnet Status for the Princess Alexandra Hospital in 2004.
