In 2004, the staff of the Princess Alexandra Hospital were elated to be the first hospital in the Southern Hemisphere to receive the prestigious Magnet designation for excellence in nursing care. Magnet designation is the highest honour bestowed by the American Nurses Credentialing Centre, foremost the largest nursing credentialing organisation in America
We are delighted to have 2000 outstanding nursing staff that have undergone a rigorous, in-depth evaluation process to examine nursing services. Achieving Magnet Recognition ultimately recognises our valuable nurses, the highest quality of care they deliver, the support they receive, opportunities available, the team environment, commitment and spirit that we are extremely proud of.
The Magnet Recognition program provides us with a framework to thoroughly examine our nursing environment and culture and analyse evidence based data. It sets the benchmark to constantly review and improve our practices to ultimately improve patient outcomes, which is always our goal.
To support this process we have, developed an electronic workbook that addresses each of the 14 Magnet Forces which aligns with the Australian Council of Health Care Standards. This tool provides nurses with the autonomy to analyse, review and instigate work place changes. We have also implemented a unit specific scorecards focusing on patient outcomes. This provides evidenced based data to support practice and allows nurses to analyse and benchmark indicators.
