The Princess Alexandra Hospital (PAH) Health Communty Council is now operational and the Council has met several times since its members were appointed in July 2007.

Health Community Councils have been established in health service districts as one of the major initiatives of the Queensland Government to enhance responsiveness and accountability in health administration. They are seen as one of the main conduits through which Queensland Health and local communities can interact.

The primary function of the Health Community Council is to obtain feedback from users of PAH services about health service issues such as access, quality and safety. The Council will then use this feedback to advocate on behalf of consumers in decision making processes about the delivery of services.

The Council's ambit extends to existing and proposed new services and includes a role to facilitate community input into hospital planning processes that will impact on consumers.

The Council also has an important role in monitoring key hospital reports about the delivery of services in the PAH Health Service District and ensuring that consumer complaints are being appropriately addressed.

Another function of the Council is to enhance community understanding about health service issues. This includes providing the community with information on positive developments in health service delivery as well as areas where improvements might be needed.

The Clinical Chief Executive Officer, PAH sits on the Council and provides the key link to hospital administration. The Council also is required to report annually to the Minister for Health.

The Council hopes to use the media to provide balanced information to the community about hospital performance and to encourage community input and debate about service issues.

Whilst the main purpose of the Council is to engage with hospital users, staff are welcome to raise issues or make suggestions to the Council.
