District Mental Health Services Provided by the Princess Alexandra Hospital

The Mental Health Service at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Health Service District is an integrated service linking inpatient services at the Hospital in Woolloongabba, with Community Mental Health Services at Annerley, Inala, and West End, enabling ease of access and continuity of care.

What Services are Offered?

• Triage Service provides the first point of clinical screening, information, and referral.

• Mobile Assessment and Acute Treatment (MAAT) Service provides comprehensive mental health assessment and short-term intervention for people in psychiatric crisis.
• Continuing Care Services (North and South) offer medium-term services to people with serious mental illness and associated disability. The Service includes case management, the fostering of community partnerships, and specialist portfolios.
• Mobile Intensive Support and Treatment (MIST) Service provides long-term services to people with severe psychiatric disability. The Service includes intensive case management, rehabilitation, and community links. Referrals are via the Continuing Care Service.
• Inpatient Services at the Princess Alexandra Hospital offer short-term admissions in a structured environment to monitor and manage a person’s mental state more closely.
• Aged Care Mental Health Service provides acute inpatient and community based services to people with severe late onset mood and psychotic disorders, chronic psychiatric disorders grown frail with age, or dementia with complicating psychiatric disorders.
• Consultation Liaison Service provides mental health assessment and management of people admitted medically to Princess Alexandra, Queen Elizabeth II, and Mater Hospitals.
• Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre provides information, resources, training, program development, and clinical consultation services across the state, to ensure that mental health services provided are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
• Consumer Consultant Service provides support to consumers from staff members with a lived experience of mental illness.

 

Who Delivers the Service?

More than 200 staff from a wide variety of professions including nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, psychiatrists, social workers, consumer consultants, and administration officers work in the District.

How are the Services Delivered?

The District Mental Health Service delivery model is based on two primary concepts:

• Consumer-focused care
• Continuity of Care

Other key concepts in the service delivery model include:

• Partnerships with other service providers, non-government organisations, and non-health government organisations.
• Early intervention
• Comprehensive, coordinated and individualised care
