Intermediate Patients
Accommodation Fees
![]() |
If you are a private patient you will need to pay your accommodation fees when being admitted into the hospital. For more information about fees, telephone the Revenue Office on phone (07) 3240 2179.
If you have private health insurance the hospital can claim the accommodation fee direct from your health insurer. Please bring your membership details. If an excess applies to your policy you will be required to pay this on admission. Please check with your insurer if you are not sure if an excess applies. You may also wish to check that your insurer will cover your admission, eg. does a waiting period or pre-existing condition apply.
Ask the Hospital to bill the insurance company direct for your accommodation fee. This does not apply to your private doctor's fees.
If you are paying for your admission and your stay is shorter than expected a refund will be posted to you. If your stay is longer than expected further payment will be required from you at discharge from hospital.
Other Charges
You are not eligible for a Medicare refund for surgical implants, prostheses, and some wound enclosure devices (eg. knee joint, intra-ocular lenses used with cataracts, pins and plates to set bones or staples to close wounds). Your private health insurance may pay part or all of these costs. If not, you will have to pay the account. If you hold a Pension or Department of Veterans' Affairs Gold Card or an eligible White Card, (and you are not covered by a health insurance fund), you will not be charged for these devices as long as you present your card to the Intermediate Admissions Office.
Workers Compensation
Patients covered by worker compensation must produce a letter of approval form WorkCover Queensland, stating that they will pay the Hospital. Otherwise, the patient must pay on admission.
Health Insurance
Direct billing to your health fund is only available when YOU provide proof that:
-
Your condition is not a pre-existing condition
-
You have previously paid excess if you are a member on an Excess Table. Otherwise the hospital will ask you to pay the excess before admission.
Veterans' Affairs
Patients who hold a White Card which is specific for their admission will be covered. If their treatment is not covered by the Department of Veterans' Affairs, then payment will be required. Patients with a Gold Card are automatically covered for their treatment.
Third Party
Patients claiming third party are required to produce the name and address of the solicitor handling their claim, payment is required on admission or directly billed to your health insurance fund. Please complete the documents form the health fund, authorising payment to the hospital. The balance of your charges is to be forwarded to your solicitor for inclusion in your third party claim.
Intermediate Accommodation
The Princess Alexandra Hospital wards have one, two and four bed bays with an ensuite. There are no special wards for intermediate patients, therefore your bed will be in the specialist ward normally used by your doctor. Patients are placed in beds according to clinical need.
