The Multicultural Mental Health District Partnership Program is a state-wide program coordinated by the Queensland Transcultural Mental Health Centre (QTMHC). The program consists of a number of Multicultural Mental Health Coordinators employed within District Mental Health Services and a central Coordinator located at QTMHC.
The program is an initiative of QTMHC following the Review of Transcultural Mental Health Services in Queensland in 2005 (see Review of Transcultural Mental Health Services in Queensland). The program is recurrently funded by Queensland Health, Mental Health Branch and is linked to the COAG initiative. Funds are provided directly to QTMHC who then forward funds for the positions to participating Districts through Service Level Agreements.
In 2006/07 nine 1.0 FTE and two 0.5 FTE positions were funded and a further two 0.5 FTE positions will be funded in 2008/09 (see Location of Positions). Over time funding applications for further positions may be applied for if evaluations indicate such a need.
The overarching role of the position is to enhance the capacity of the District Mental Health Service to respond to the mental health issues of people from CALD backgrounds. This will be achieved through clinical consultation, education and training, and promotion and prevention activities with members of cultural communities. The position also provides a conduit between the District Service, QTMHC and various cultural community groups to enable issues to be identified and responses developed.
