Princess Alexandra Hospital completed a major expansion of its radiation oncology facilities in January 2012.
PAH provides acute radiation oncology cancer treatment and is a state-wide referral centre for malignancies of the head and neck, upper gastrointestinal area, lung, as well as sarcomas, lymphomas and melanoma.
There has been a significant growth in demand for radiation oncology treatment and this has resulted in the need to increase the treatment capacity and expand the services within the hospital. In response to this identified need, Queensland Health provideded additional funding for the following:
- Construction of three additional cancer treatment bunkers (concrete "shells" that houses linear accelerator cancer treatment machines)
- Support areas for the bunkers
- Increased treatment planning area
- Expansion into a former outpatient area
- A new molecular imaging PET/CT scan facility
