The second and largest stage of Princess Alexandra Hospital's Emergency Department Expansion is an extension to the main hospital building, completed in November 2010.
This extension features a brand new Emergency Department, which substantially increases the capacity for emergency patients at the hospital.
The Emergency Department includes:

an increase from 12 to 25 acute treatment bays, 4 to 8 sub acute bays, 4 to 5 resuscitation rooms and 6 to 8 observation unit

provision for a CT scanner connected to resuscitation rooms

allied health treatment areas

fast-track treatment areas

mental health emergency assessment unit

hot lift from roof top helipad to resuscitation rooms

decontamination and disaster response facilities
The expansion will also include a new Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) which features:
- 30 extra acute inpatient beds including 10 single rooms
- chest pain assessment including stress testing
- allied health treatment area and gym
- patient discharge lounge
- staff handover area and tea room
