New ED and Medical Assessment and Planning Unit
The second and largest stage of Princess Alexandra Hospital's Emergency Department Expansion will be an extension to the main hospital building, due for completion in mid-late 2010.
This extension will feature a brand new Emergency Department, which will substantially increase the capacity for emergency patients at the hospital.
The Emergency Department will include:

an increase from 12 to 25 acute treatment bays, 4 to 8 sub acute bays, 4 to 5 resuscitation rooms and 6 to 8 observation unit

provision for a CT scanner connected to resuscitation rooms

allied health treatment areas

fast-track treatment areas

mental health emergency assessment unit

hot lift from roof top helipad to resuscitation rooms

decontamination and disaster response facilities
The expansion will also includes a new Medical Assessment and Planning Unit which features:
- 30 extra acute inpatient beds including 10 single rooms
- chest pain assessment including stress testing
- allied health treatment area and gym
- patient discharge lounge
- staff handover area and tea room
