> 8 April: Helipad opening soon

The first major milestone of the PAH Emergency Department Expansion project is now only weeks away.

The official opening date for the new Dr Peter Thomas Helipad is planned for early May, with final construction work and safety testing currently being undertaken on the development.

The helipad, which sits seven metres above the roof of the southeast corner of the main hospital building, will be fully operational before the remainder of the Emergency Department Expansion is complete.

Staff will be able to transfer critically ill patients from the helipad directly into the Emergency Department’s
resuscitation rooms, via a new 'hot lift'.

Meanwhile, with the 'shell' of the extended Emergency Department now complete, the focus is now on internal fitout, including interfacing with the existing hospital building.  This month, the first wall breakthrough between the new building and an existing hospital ward occurred.

The photos below show the internal construction of the new emergency department.  You can also view the latest aerial photographs of the construction site here.

The project is rapidly reaching the point where construction works will begin to interface with the existing hospital building.  From this Sunday, the first "holes" will be cut into the main hospital building to join existing wards with the new Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU).

The roof-top helipad remains on track, with the proposed first helicopter retrieval landing expected in Mid May 2010.

> 8 February: Successful weekend work

A large component of Princess Alexandra Hospital's new roof-top helideck was delivered and installed on the weekend.  The fire escape stairs were delivered to the hospital campus via a wide-load truck on the early hours of Saturday 6 February.  They were then craned to the 7-metre high helipad.  Thank you to local residents for their patience and understanding during this work.

> 7 January: Construction update and aerial photos

2010 promises to be an even busier year on the site of Princess Alexandra Hospital's emergency department expansion project.  The project is on track for the helipad to be operational in April this year; with the expanded emergency department and medical assessment and planning unit following in September.  The PET scanner and radiation oncology bunkers are expected to be complete in early 2011.

The roof-top helipad is now in place and the 'hot lift', which will provide access directly into the emergency department resuscitation rooms, is nearing completion.  The concrete 'shell' of the expanded building has also been completed.

> 25 November: Change to PA Hospital main entrance

Commencing at 5am, Monday 30 November, the PA Hospital main entrance will be used for trucks entering and leaving the Emergency Department Expansion construction site.

This will mean that there may be minor delays to incoming and outgoing traffic, however hospital and public vehicles will always be given priority.  In addition, the southern side of the footpath will be closed for the remainder of the construction works. The northern side will remain open.  There will be traffic controllers and signage in place to control these changed conditions.

All trucks will be in communication with traffic controllers and work site personnel to allow for a smooth entry and exit without causing major traffic delays.  In the event of a number of trucks arriving in the area at the same time, they will be asked to queue at a location off site.

A map outlining the area affected and the changes is below:

PAH's emergency department expansion construction site is a hive of activity, with work on the helipad, building foundations and new elevators continuing.

Scaffolding has been erected on the roof of the main hospital building for the installation of the new helipad, which will commence next month.  A large hoist has also been set up to allow builders to access the roof.

A number of concrete slabs are being poured in the site for the various functions of the new facilities.  Construction on the emergency department "hot lifts", which will take patients and staff from the roof-top helipad straight into the resuscitation rooms, also commenced this month.

> Ipswich Road footpath closure

The section of footpath on Ipswich Road outside the emergency department construction site (hospital side of the road) has been closed temporarily.  This closure is to allow the construction company to ensure stability of the work site following this week's wet weather.

For safety reasons, the public are reminded not to enter the closed section of footpath, or to walk on the road or taxi rank at any time.

Alternative pedestrian access along this section of Ipswich Road will be on the opposite side of the road only, near the Buranda shopping centre.
