HEAPS Train the Presenter Refresher - 1 Day Workshop

Aim

The objective of this course is to update presenters skills to deliver training in Human Error and Patient Safety (HEAPS) courses which have been developed to introduce healthcare workers and managers to the practical management of human error in the workplace. The fundamental principles of HEAPS is to change the culture of health care workers from one of 'blame and shame' to one of pro-active and constructive analysis of the broader 'systems' issues.

Advisory Group

The HEAPS Faculty/Advisory group consists of HEAPS content experts and 'champions' committed to improving patient safety.  Their role is to advice on the development and maintenance of the Quality Improvement Framework for HEAPS training courses.

Description

HEAPS methodology assists staff at all levels to:

  • Understand error chains and analyse systems of work rather than just blame the individual.
  • Realise the critical importance of communication and teamwork to patient safety.
  • Acknowledge that human error is inevitable and even the best staff can be involved in some of the worst outcomes.
  • Identify the need to discuss adverse events openly and learn from them.
  • Begin to move away from the 'blame culture' and access the means to do this.
Objective

The aim is to learn from errors, reduce preventable harm and develop a more reliable and safe system of health care.
