Introduction to the Fifth Edition

The fifth edition of the Primary Clinical Care Manual 2007 (PCCM) is the product of an extensive review and consultation process. Health professionals working in isolated areas, rural hospitals, specialist areas in Queensland and Greater West Area Health Service – New South Wales, as users of the PCCM, were invited to have input and participated in the review process. The review has resulted in new health management protocols and clinical care guidelines and the re-structure and improvement of existing sections from the fourth edition. The PCCM is intended for use by Indigenous Health Workers, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Paramedics and Medical Practitioners engaged in collaborative practice in Rural Hospitals, Isolated Practice Areas and Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs throughout Queensland and Greater West Area Health Service – New South Wales.

The Primary Clinical Care Manual (2007) (PCCM) has been developed to promote and support compliance with the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 by Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Indigenous Health Workers and Paramedics in rural hospitals, isolated practice areas and Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs.

The PCCM incorporates Clinical Care Guidelines (CCG's) for responding to health needs of clients in these health service areas and the Health Management Protocols (hereafter referred to as HMP) which are essential for the implementation of the Drug Therapy Protocols (hereafter referred to as DTP) for Nurse Practitioners, Registered Nurses in rural facilities and isolated practice areas, Sexual and Reproductive Health Programs and Indigenous Health Workers and Paramedics as authorised in the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996.
