Nurse Practitioners

The QNC defines Nurse Practitioner (NP) as:

A registered nurse educated to function autonomously and collaboratively in an advanced and extended clinical role. The nurse practitioner role includes assessment and management of clients using nursing knowledge and skills and may include but is not limited to the direct referral of patients to other health-care professionals, prescribing medications, and ordering diagnostic investigations. The NP role is grounded in the nursing profession’s values, knowledge, theories and practice and provides innovative and flexible health-care delivery that complements other healthcare providers. The scope of practice of the nurse practitioner is determined by the context in which the nurse practitioner is educated and authorised to practise.3

Nurse Practitioners in all States and Territories will find the PCCM a useful guide to practise. The PCCM may be used by them as HMPs and / or clinical practice guidelines or as an adjunct or starting point for HMPs and / or clinical practice guidelines. Further information in regard to the Nurse Practitioner may be found in the Queensland Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulation 1996 and the Nursing Act 1992 and for NSW the Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Act 1966, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2002 and the Nurses and Midwives Act 1991.
