The Coordinating Epidemiologist, Population Health Epidemiologists and Data Managers work together as a team (no line management) to provide statewide support for Population Health Branch.
Provide strategic advice and direction for epidemiology practice.
Coordinate and oversee the identification of appropriate health indicators and benchmarks for occurrence of disease, factors associated with disease, and interventions.
Coordinate the ongoing review of information systems and their capacity to meet changing information needs.
Coordinate training of Epidemiologists and co-supervision of Masters of Applied Epidemiology / Masters of Public Health students.
Create and maintain links with the private sector, other government departments and universities on epidemiology and research.
Facilitate and monitor public health research activities across Population Health Branch.
Increase the awareness of Population Health Branch to available information to assist in monitoring interventions and outcomes.
Represent Population Health Branch on local, national and international forums in epidemiology including:
Co-ordinate and/or undertake and maintain procedures to ensure the production of standard epidemiological reports (Vaccination Register, Notifiable Conditions Register, Zonal Indicators) to assist evidence-based planning, monitoring and evaluation of health services and programs.
Provide strategic epidemiological advice to inform priority setting, public health initiatives and directions for research at the Population Health Branch Units and Network levels.
Initiate, design and perform epidemiological and statistical analysis of priority public health activities/research, including social and behavioural data, as part of project/program evaluation.
Coordinate and/or undertake epidemiological investigations of communicable disease outbreaks and non-communicable disease trends in the catchment area, and provide advice to the Public Health Medical Officer and Environmental Health Officers.
Develop and provide training opportunities in epidemiology and public health for Unit and Health Service District staff, and selected Local Government staff.
Create and maintain effective working relationships with other Population Health epidemiologists, other Branches within Queensland Health (in particular Information and Business Management Branch), tertiary institutions, community-based agencies, funding bodies, and private organisations, including the Divisions of General Practice.
Provide expert advice on epidemiology and statistical issues to assist health service district planning, local government, priority setting and evaluation in areas of public health significance in line with Branch goals and core business.
Co-supervise under-graduate and/or post graduate students, public health registrars, and research officers undertaking research related to the core business of the Population Health Branch.
To support the Epidemiologists and other surveillance staff in the collection and reporting of a range of health-related information. This includes behavioural and social epidemiological data to establish public health priorities for the zone, and to set standards and indicators for measuring program and services performance.
Manage all aspects of data collection including the development and documentation of systems, protocols, procedures and user manuals. Assist with ongoing systems development and implementation for the program/service interface.
Oversee the entry, storage and communication of data, in particular Immunisation Register and notifiable diseases system, within the Unit and to Unit clients.
Ensure that data is prepared for use in the monitoring and evaluation of the program/service. Assist in the production of reports for relevant bodies, providing information for analysis and publication as required.
Assess the need and provide support for the data management system used by services, including provision of in-service training in basic data management, analytical techniques, and the use of applications and systems.
In consultation with their supervisor or local Epidemiologist, assist in and advise community agencies and health service providers regarding their own health indicator data collection, analysis and interpretation. Devise innovative methods of health indicator information sharing with communities in support of health development throughout the zone.
Design, implement, monitor and manage a quality assurance program for the data collection for the service/program.
Assist in the development and review of documents relating to protocols and procedures for the use of the data, and the design and use of standard forms used in the services/program.
Provide specific health information management, data management expertise and medical record services advice and support as required for the service/program.
Assist with the development, administration and management of relevant community surveys and the preparation of data for analysis, including coding.
