The Parent Transition Program uses an Interpersonal Psychotherapy approach to help parents resolve mild to moderate mental health issues. It was originally designed for the treatment of depression and been adapted to target other issues. The program aims to change interpersonal relationships by simplifying them into four core problem areas. These involve: Interpersonal Disputes with others, Life Role Transitions, Social Isolation/Depression and Loss-Grief of a loved one.

In providing a simplified means of understanding these problems, it provides parents with alternative pathways to resolve their interpersonal difficulties and helps them to improve their ability to express emotions, communicate and form supportive relationships.

It is thought that parental participation will:

Parents will meet for three hours each week over 7 weeks. In order to evaluate the program, parental self report questionnaires will be issued at the start, and 3 months after the group.

In summary, the program is run by a Psychologist and other health professionals. It targets parent mental health issues and is conducted via 7 x 3 hr weekly parent group sessions on the Gold Coast. The program is based on strategies that have been proven effective in the treatment of depression and other mild/moderate mental health issues. It does not target child behaviour problems and other severe mental health disorders (substance abuse, active suicidality/psychotic conditions).
