This information paper presents a brief overview of key aspects of the current health status of Queenslanders and includes a series of national and international benchmarking comparisons.
The focus of the report is primarily on the initial four major national health priorities (cardiovascular disease, cancer, injury, and mental health), and presents the current status of Queenslanders in these four areas, measured by mortality, morbidity and risk factors associated with each of these. In addition, the report presents information of particular interest to Queensland: melanoma, pool drowning, and SIDS. Inequalities in health status experienced by particular groups in the population are also highlighted.
Queensland Health aims to help people to better health and well-being. The
ultimate goal is for the people of Queensland to have a level of health equal
to the best in the world. In order to achieve this, with the ever-increasing
demands being placed on the health system, it is essential that resources
and efforts be targeted where they are most needed, and where they will produce
the greatest gains. The information in this report will assist Queensland
Health to plan and implement effective strategies to achieve improved health
outcomes for all Queenslanders.
