Child health - child abuse and neglect

The Act provides for the protection of children from abuse and neglect. It requires doctors and registered nurses to notify the chief executive, Department of Child Safety, of any reasonable suspicions of harm to a child.

The Public Health Act 2005 includes provisions for some Designated Medical Officers to hold a child for up to four days if they believe that a child has been or is at risk of being harmed.

Additional protection for children is provided under the Child Protection Act 1999. Any actions taken under this Act take precedence over those under the Public Health Act 2005.
