QALS - Queensland Amputee Limb Service

General Information

QALS is the administrative body of Queensland Health which is responsible for the administration of the provision of definitive artificial limbs to eligible residents of Queensland.

When first seeking assistance from this service you should contact our office to identify your eligibility. Services can be supplied through an  Amputee Clinic or through a Prosthetic Service Provider  (PSP - Limb maker). Our normal level of provision is one limb per amputation.

Components

QALS provides prostheses (artificial limbs) for all types of amputation with components from an approved list maintained by QALS. QALS may accept cost sharing with you if you wish to purchase components not on the QALS approved list. It is advised that you discuss in detail with your Prosthetist (limb maker) and Amputee Clinic staff any component you are considering as some combinations may not be safe or appropriate for you.

Life Expectancy of Prosthesis

The prosthesis and associated accessories are to be maintained in a clean condition and have a life expectancy of at least 3 years. Any major repairs or replacements under this time requires full justification from you and your prescriber. Please note that a prosthesis is only replaced where required, not solely upon age of the prosthesis.

Repairs

Minor and major repairs can be arranged directly with your Prosthetist. However, if the inspection of your prosthesis reveals that more extensive repairs are warranted, a prosthetic assessment may be required. Only current issue prostheses supplied by QALS will be repaired at QALS expense.

Consumable Supplies

QALS provides such consumable items as stump socks, cosmetic gloves etc, through your manufacturer. Annual limits do apply.

Second Limbs

QALS allows for the provision of one prosthesis which meets all or most of your daily needs. Special consideration may be given for geographically isolated patients, specific occupations, limited medical conditions or special needs. All such requests will be individually assessed on merit from information provided by yourself, your prescriber or your employer.

Costs

The normal level of QALS provision is supplied to QALS clients free of charge.

Appointments

Clients are encouraged to make any appointments at their amputee clinic or with their Prosthetic Service Provider as they deem necessary.

Compensation

Clients who are seeking compensation may be assisted by QALS until settlement is finalised. If you have received compensation for the loss of your limb you may approach QALS to establish your eligibility for assistance.
