QCMHL Training Programs

      

The Queensland Centre for Mental Health Learning (QCMHL) currently delivers a range of training programs aimed at providing practical foundation knowledge as well as skills focusing on consumer safety and mental health recovery. Training is delivered at a number of teaching sites across the state. Attendance at courses conducted by QCMHL attracts continuing professional development points. QCMHL Nationally Accredited Courses

30907QLD Course in Administering a Mental State Examination

This is a one day workshop that is nationally accredited by the Training and Employment Recognition Council Queensland. This course, predominately applying to Queensland Health clinical staff working in the field of mental health, is designed to enable participants to more effectively undertake and document a Mental State Examination within a recovery framework and to Queensland Health specifications. Competency based assessments will be conducted throughout the workshop by fully qualified workplace assessors.

QCMHL Mental Health Workforce Development Program

QCMHL is delivering the Mental Health Workforce Development Program to Queensland Health staff who are new to the mental health area (those who have been working in mental health for 2 years or less).
The focus of this program is to provide staff with additional knowledge and skills that can be applied in their work with people who have mental health issues. The workshops will be delivered by clinicians with strong educational backgrounds and mental health experience. The training is underpinned by a strong recovery focus and a view to the enhancement of work-based practice.


Currently the follow workshops are being delivered:

  • Suicide Risk Assessment and Management

This one-day workshop aims to provide mental health staff with the appropriate knowledge and skills to assess and respond to individuals who are at rick of self-harm or suicide.

  • Case Management

This one-day workshop introduces staff to the knowledge and techniques required for effective case management of mental health consumers. The focus is upon the application of holistic and person-centred care within the context and requirements of public mental health.

  • Provide a Brief Intervention

This one-day workshop aims to provide an introduction to brief interventions that are focused upon the needs and goals of the individual accessing mental health services. This includes utilising appropriate models and therapeutic interventions such as Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

QCMHL is also delivering a series of other training workshops. These include:

  • Mental Health Educator Development

    The Mental Health Educator Development workshop aims to enhance the relevant knowledge and skills of staff that provide mental health training as part of their current role, and also to facilitate an educator network for the provision of additional support.

  • Mental Health Clinician Supervision Training Program "Introduction to Supervision"

    The Introduction to Supervision training is a one-day supervision training workshop that has been designed to orient mental health clinicians and practitioners to the expectations and processes involved in receiving clinical supervision. The training has been designed for clinicians and practitioners who are currently (or will be in the future) receiving clinical supervision and would like to enhance their supervision experience.

  • Mental Health Clinician Supervision Training Program "Supervisor"

    The Supervisor training is a practical and comprehensive two-day program that promotes a collaborative process-based supervision model. The training has been designed to cater for varying types of supervisory experience; from novice to more experienced clinical supervisors who are currently supervising staff or expect to be in a position in the future that will require the provision of clinical supervision. It is suitable for all mental health practitioners, regardless of professional orientation, area specification or service delivery model. The training is practical and skills-based, while focusing on the "how to" aspects of providing clinical supervision.

  • Mental Health Clinical Supervision Training Program "Supervising Supervisors"

    The Supervising Supervisors workshop provides a safe and challenging environment for participants to develop advanced skills in providing supervision to those who are already professional supervisors themselves.This program requires Clinicians to have attended the previous Two-day Supervisor training or a similar program that follows the Queensland Health Clinical Supervision Guidelines

  • Critical Components of Risk Assessment and Management for the Mental Health Practitioner

    This one-day workshop provides practitioners with the core knowledge and skills required in the assessment and management or risk. The CRM training covers the principles of risk assessment and management; risk and protective factors; the range of risks in clinical practice; cultural issues in risk management; the use of the Mental Health Act 2000 in risk management; clinical management strategies to reduce risk and the importance of linking risk management plans to risk assessments. The training is interactive and practical and will include a competency based assessment.

  • Mental Health Assessment & Capacity 

    This two day workshop is designed to enhance the ability and practice skills of mental health practitioners involved in completing mental health assessments with adults. The workshop assists mental health practitioners in obtaining relevant information and developing summary formulation.The workshop also assists clinicians by providing knowledge about assessing the capacity of the consumer in relation to consent for mental health assessment and treatment, as well as general health care. This module is relevant to all Queensland Health mental health clinicians, regardless of their level of experience. This training includes a competency based assessment.

  • Capacity Assessment (half-day workshop)

    This half-day workshop assists clinicians by providing knowledge about assessing the capacity of the consumer in relation to consent for mental health assessment and treatment, as well as general health care. The workshop explores the avenues available to staff for substitute decision making if a person has impaired decision making capacity.

  • Advanced Supervision for Clinical Educators Workshop

    QCMHL and Clinical Education and Training Queensland (ClinEdQ) have partnered to deliver advanced supervision workshops to clinical educators. This is an experientially-based workshop and, as such, requires the participant to actively participate and reflect on personal practice experiences. This workshop has been designed for participants who specialise in clinical education. Attendance at this workshop will be open to staff from all professions, including medicine, nursing and midwifery, allied health and oral health.
