Forensic Sciences is based at the Forensic and Scientific Services complex at Coopers Plains and consists of four disciplines:
All disciplines are NATA Accredited and Quality System Certified to ISO 9001.
The Biology laboratory has, in recent years, developed the use of DNA PCR based technology to the point where it is the major tool used to provide forensic DNA comparisons of various sample types such as, blood, saliva, semen, hair, soft tissue, and bone.
The principle purpose of this work is to assist investigators in the early stages of a case and to assist the courts to understand the significance of forensic DNA evidence.
Most of the laboratory's work is conducted pursuant to the Drugs Misuse Act and involves illicit drug analysis. The laboratory plays a major role in the investigation of clandestine laboratories.
The laboratory conducts physical evidence examination in areas including, post blast explosive analysis, soil profiling, fibre analysis and comparison, polymer analysis, hydrocarbon profiling, poisons analysis, cause of fibre failure such as webbing belt and strap failures and general chemical analysis and profiling.
This group provides reports as to the cause of death for persons referred to the facility by a Coroner. Specific services provided include:
The laboratory provides services to a range of clients. Assays include blood alcohol, drug and poisons analysis of biological samples.
