Clinical forensic medicine

The principal function of the Clinical Forensic Medicine Unit is to provide a range of clinical forensic medical services including:

examination of victims of crime and of alleged offenders with a view to obtaining, documenting and interpreting medical evidence
examination of adult sexual assault victims
providing toxicological advice to the Coroner and courts in relation to suspicious deaths and driving matters
appearing in court to give objective, impartial expert evidence to support to the court
examination and treatment of police detainees
supporting the Office of the State Coroner in relation to the investigation of healthcare-related deaths.

In addition to the Department of Health-employed forensic physicians, the Queensland Police Service and the Department of Justice and Attorney-General can utilise General Practitioner Government Medical Officers (GP-GMOs) on a fee-for-service arrangement.
