Forensic and Scientific Services: Forensic Pathology

The unit's forensic pathologists provide autopsy and other specialised services to assist both coroners and bereaved families during investigations of deaths that have been reported to coroners under the Coroners Act 2003.

These examinations help to determine the cause and circumstances of a death and assist in identification of the deceased person.

Information regarding the cause and circumstances of a death may help to prevent similar deaths in the future and may, in some circumstances, contribute to criminal investigations and prosecutions.

Specialised services provided by other Forensic Pathology staff are integral in assisting forensic pathologists to determine the cause of death as well as providing counselling and information about the coronial process for families of deceased persons. These include:
