The Prince Charles Hospital provides a major tertiary level cardiothoracic referral service for Queensland. The cardiac unit is one of the largest cardiac units in the world. This service includes paediatric cardiology and paediatric cardiac surgery for neonates, infants, children and adolescents. A foetal diagnostic service is also provided.

The goal of Queensland Centre for Congenital Heart Disease (QCCHD) is to provide access to effective diagnosis and treatment which is supported by an holistic family centred care approach, thereby giving the child the best possible chance of enjoying a full and healthy life.

The QCCHD provides diagnosis and treatment for neonates, infants, children and adolescents with congenital heart disease. The population served by the unit has a catchment area of Queensland, northern New South Wales, parts of the Northern Territory and the Pacific Rim.

The QCCHD consists of a Children's Ward including a High Dependency Unit and is supported by Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Intensive Care. Public and Private inpatient and outpatients options are available. The Centre utilises many other departments of the hospital, such as Catheter and Angiography Laboratories; Electrophysiology and Pacing Laboratory; Electrocardiography Department; and Medical Imaging Department, which includes "state of the art" Cardiac Medical Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT).

Each year, the Children's Ward admits approximately 650 infants and children up to the age of 17 years. The procedures undertaken include 300 paediatric surgical and 250 paediatric cardiology diagnostic and interventional cases per year.
