at The Prince Charles Hospital
The
Children's Ward at The Prince Charles Hospital (TPCH) is a 20-bed unit set
up to care for children with congenital heart conditions. The ward consists
of a 5-bed high dependency unit (HDU), used mainly to care for children post-operatively,
including transfers from the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). There
are also 2 single side rooms attached to this area which can be used in conjunction
with the HDU or as separate rooms to cater for children who may require special
care, isolation due to illness, other medical conditions or long term care.
These 7 beds all have individual monitors, exactly the same as the ones you
may see in the PICU. Nursing and medical staff use these monitors to watch
a patient's heart rate and rhythm, oxygen saturations, blood pressure and
respiratory rate.
To give teenagers some privacy and individuality during their stay, there is a two bed room available.
Three single bedrooms allowing one parent to stay with their child are also available. These rooms are set aside on a priority needs basis, mainly for breast feeding mothers and babies, isolation requirements and any other situation that may be deemed necessary as requiring a single room.
The ward also has a 4-bed nursery room for the care of babies. Two beds in this room also have monitors, for instance where a baby requires further monitoring outside the HDU.
