As part of the holistic care approach which we provide, parents and carers are encouraged to be accommodated within or close by the hospital. We encourage parents to rest during this period when able.
Temporary short term accommodation is available on campus for parents and guardians. Rooms can accommodate one person. Children are not able to stay in these rooms. The contents of the room include linen, hand basin, desk and cupboard. Separate male/female showers are available. Other facilities include a laundry, a shared kitchen with tea/coffee facilities, microwave, frypan, and toaster. Food may be purchased from the 'Breeze Café' on the Ground floor of the Main Acute Building or at nearby Chermside Shopping Centre.
The Childrens Ward has five single rooms which are allocated
according to the following patient needs/priority:
A baby or child who requires isolating due to infection;
a breast feeding baby;
a child with a need to room in with a parent.
These single rooms have ensuite facilities, a fold out lounge for sleeping and can accommodate one parent or guardian.
In other areas of the Childrens Ward parents are able to stay near their childs bed, and this can be discussed with the Nurse Unit Manager.
The parent's lounge within the ward has tea and coffee making facilities, a microwave, and television. There is a phone for parent's incoming calls in the parents lounge. Outgoing calls can made from the payphone in the reception area outside the Children's Ward.
Parents are loaned beepers to ensure quick notification if your baby or child
is unsettled.
An expressing room is available for breast-feeding mothers where
an electric breast pump is available. Breastfeeding mothers are requested
to bring a supply of plastic snap lock bags to store expressed breast milk
for freezing.
A social worker is attached to the unit and is available to support you and your family.
If you or your relatives have difficulty speaking English please ask for an interpreter to be present while discussing your child's condition. The nursing staff can arrange this for you. This is a free service and can help relieve any unnecessary misunderstandings and anxieties.
A pay car park is located at the hospital.
Other facilities and Services of the hospital are detailed in the Patient
