The Peer Support program is about supporting individuals who have a spinal cord injury and their families. This happens when people are newly injured in the Spinal Injuries Unit, and can continue to offer support throughout their life. The program aims to provide support during the experience of rehabilitation and when experiencing other major life changes. The service is designed to assist people to live inclusive lives in their community.
Peer Support staff are people who have had a spinal cord injury and have experienced life in the community.
The Peer Support Coordinators aim to help and support individuals who have experienced a Spinal Cord Injury during their rehabilitation in the Spinal Injuries Unit and to resume a meaningful lifestyle following rehabilitation. They will assist to develop supports within the community to ensure individuals are able to resume their lifestyle, including their role in the family, maintenance of social networks, recreation and employment.
Support individuals and their families as they experience rehabilitation
Explaining the process to the individual and their family through the eyes of someone with life experience
Can assure people who are newly injured and family members that lifestyles can be reshaped after injury.
Share experiences and challenges as a person living with a spinal cord injury
Share information and resources on how to deal with life experiences and help find solutions
Help develop links and networks in your local community
