Spinal Outreach Team

The Spinal Outreach Team (SPOT) supports people affected by spinal cord injury throughout Queensland, Australia by providing quality, timely and client focussed consultancy, early intervention and education services in the areas of social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and nursing.

How Can SPOT Help?

As part of its early intervention program, SPOT provides a post-discharge follow-up service for people who have been in the Queensland Spinal Injuries Unit. Each client, if they are agreeable, will be contacted by a team member prior to discharge and placed on a 12 month follow-up program of phone calls. During these phone calls we ask clients or their family to identify any issues that are affecting their progress and that SPOT may be able to help with.

Intending not to duplicate existing services, SPOT has an educational and consultancy focus. We can help in many areas such as:

  • skin care
  • equipment
  • finances
  • home modification
  • work and education information
  • obtaining services
  • pain management
  • counselling and support
  • activities of daily living
  • joint and muscle problems
  • posture and seating
  • bowel and bladder management
  • other allied health and nursing issues
  • SPOT can tailor individualised educational sessions to your requirements and needs.

Services are provided through home or site visits if you are within a 200 km radius of Brisbane or as part of our regular program of regional visits. Advice and education can also be provided over the telephone or using multi-media such as videoconferencing.
