Australian Organ Donor Awareness Week
Australian Organ Donor Awareness Week will be 17 - 23 February 2008. Australians are encouraged to 'Sign on to save lives' as part of a national registration drive to encourage more people to sign on to the Australian Organ Donor Register as a donor.
As the number of people on Australian transplant waiting lists is increasing, organ and tissue donation is becoming more important. Just one organ donor can save up to 10 lives and public awareness is vital for increasing the number of people willing to donate organs and tissues after death.
It is also important that people talk with their family, friends and partners about their wishes as next of kin will have to confirm their wishes about organ and tissue donation.
Annual Service of Thanksgiving
Services of thanksgiving are held midyear throughout Australia in memory of those who have donated. The service is in recognition of those who have given the gift of life and love and the families of donors who have made caring decisions at times of great personal loss.
